GRMC Gwalior loses hope to get 100 more MBBS seats due to poor performance of acting dean

BHOPAL / Gajra Raja Medical College (GRMC) Gwalior, the oldest medical college of Madhya Pradesh, couldn’t get 100 additional seats of MBBS due to the poor performance of Dr Sameer Gupta as a dean of the institution, Gupta is allegedly involved in a massive scam of staff nurse recruitment. Gupta is the only dean of a government medical college in the state who also runs a private hospital.

Aiming at increasing the intake capacity of MBBS students by another 100 seats, GRMC had sent a proposal to National Medical Commission (NMC) because the Union Health Ministry offered to increase 100 seats of under graduation for every old medical college of the country.

GRMC Gwalior is the oldest medical college and was established in 1946, in Madhya Pradesh among the four old colleges, the three other old colleges are Gandhi Medical College (GMC) Bhopal, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College (MGMC) Indore, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College (NSCBMC) Jabalpur.

A team of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC had recently visited GRMC to inspect the requirement of staff and infrastructure for running additional 100 seats along with the existing 150 seats, a total of 250 capacity but the NMC rejected the college proposal of increasing the seats due to the team of MARB had found inadequate facilities of infrastructure and insufficient staff including doctors. While GMC Bhopal, MGMC Indore and NSCBMC Jabalpur have been got the permission of 100 seats of MBBS degree course for each college by NMC, now they have an intake capacity of 250 seats each.

Acting dean Gupta is allegedly involved in a massive recruitment scam in which staff nurses, paramedical staff, and scientists have been appointed in which major irregularities have been done by him and his colleagues. Sources said that a transaction of a huge amount has been made in these appointments.
Around 278 staff nurses have been recruited in GRMC Gwalior through an exam conducted by MP Online. The medical college has given appointments to the applicants while ignoring the rules and regulations made for reserved categories by the general administration department and the guidelines of the MP high court. The matter came to light in the internal audit of the medical education department.

Interestingly, the acting dean of GRMC Gwalior, Gupta runs a 150-bedded private hospital namely Link Hospital in Gwalior city, the hospital is owned by his wife Subeera Gupta.
