MP Initiates Process to Implement Uniform Civil Code, Forms High-Level Panel
BHOPAL/The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated the process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state and constituted a high-level committee under the leadership of a former Supreme Court judge to examine the issue and gather public opinion, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Monday.
In a statement issued to the media, Yadav said the state government had decided to move forward with the implementation of the UCC, arguing that the existence of different personal laws and customs governing marriage and related matters across religious communities was no longer necessary in the present era.
“The time has come for Madhya Pradesh to move towards a Uniform Civil Code,” the Chief Minister said, noting that states such as Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam had already implemented the UCC.
Yadav said the committee comprises experts and scholars from diverse fields and will undertake consultations across districts to seek suggestions from members of different religious communities. The exercise is aimed at ensuring broad-based participation before the framework is finalised.
The Chief Minister said the state government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was moving ahead with the proposal while maintaining dialogue and coordination with all sections of society. He described Madhya Pradesh as one of the most suitable states for implementing a uniform civil code.
To facilitate public participation, the government has also launched a dedicated website through which citizens can submit their suggestions regarding the proposed legislation.
The move marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to introduce a common civil framework governing personal matters, a subject that has remained at the centre of political and legal debate in the country for decades.
